Grateful Dead
Attics of My Life

The most Lennon song the Dead played, and a choir could sing it.
Hollow marks: the other 49 scored songs · Hatched band: the Crossover Zone
The case
The strongest honest argument for each side, then the ruling.
The Garcia argument
It is not bound to its recording. The piece has been sung a cappella by a choir, which shows it is a score more than a tape. And the Dead themselves rarely risked it: they played it about fifteen times in 1970, then put it away for seventeen years.
The Lennon argument
The whole song is a three-part vocal arrangement sung by Garcia, Weir and Lesh throughout, with no lead voice and no solo. That has to be written and rehearsed, and it leaves nothing to decide on stage. A band cannot improvise its way through a piece like this, and the long gap in its history fits that.
The verdict: GLI 88
The Lennon end of the Dead's Phase I. Everything consequential was fixed before a performance began, and the band's difficulty with it is part of the evidence. Only its independence from the record keeps it below the Beatles' studio pieces.
What is fixed
- All three vocal lines
- Lyric
- Form and tempo
What is open
- Almost nothing
Evidence dimensions
Each runs from 0, Garcia, to 100, Lennon. Their weighted composite is 88. The published GLI is 88, the same.
A slow hymn with every bar accounted for.
Fifty-one performances that try to do the same thing.
Three voice parts written and learned.
Composed. Nothing develops in performance.
It can be sung by a choir with no band, so it is not tied to its record.
Transformational tolerance
It survives a change of forces. It does not survive loosening.
Confidence: 78%
Only 51 listed performances, from one counter. The vocal arrangement is well documented.
