The case

The strongest honest argument for each side, then the ruling.

The Garcia argument

The basic track was played by musicians from a tradition that does not work from a score, and by one account it went down in a single take. The instrumental passage is a dialogue between instruments of the kind that tradition improvises. No other Beatle is on it.

The Lennon argument

Harrison wrote and directed it, and George Martin scored eight violins and three cellos to follow the bends of the Indian instruments. The tape was then edited and sped up, raising the key a semitone. It was never performed live. The finished piece is a studio assembly of a composed work.

The verdict: GLI 83

Composed and constructed, with a basic track that was played more freely than anything else on its album. It sits below A Day in the Life for that reason.

What is fixed

  • Melody and lyric
  • The string score
  • Tape speed and edit

What is open

  • The Indian players' phrasing on the basic track

Keep arguing

Every placement is relative. These are the songs this one was measured against.

The record

  • No other Beatle plays on it. Harrison worked with Indian musicians on dilruba, tabla, tambura and swarmandal.Source ↗
  • George Martin scored eight violins and three cellos to imitate the slides and bends of the dilrubas.Source ↗
  • Before the vocal was recorded the track was edited and sped up, which cut it to 5:05 and raised the key a semitone.Source ↗
  • By one session account the basic track was a single take on the first day.Source ↗

Where the sources disagree

  • Harrison remembered three spliced segments; the session account says one take.
  • The Indian players went unnamed for decades and personnel lists differ.
